lyrics

To Caddy,

After I’m gone,
name your daughter after me.
I saw her once
in a dream:

she has my eyes
(gold-green like the sea
crashing on rocks
of the jetties).

Please go on,
for grief always fades,
turns to light
that will fill your days.

It’s hard to read
my letters the same,
but still try
to mitigate the pain.

Caddy, don’t forget me.
Don’t forget me for me.

With the knife
I held against your throat—
bury it with me,
so we’ll always stay close.

With our mother,
lie a little bit:
tell her what I’ve done
was an accident.

Down by the branch,
where we used to play,
crack the ice,
put it to his face.

On cold nights,
I’ll visit you in sleep
to try to
bring you some peace.

Caddy, don’t forget me.
Don’t forget me for me.

Love,
Quentin
